Task Force On Redistricting (2021; disbanded)

Every 10 years, following the Census, the districts for political representatives are redrawn to adjust to updated population patterns. In the City of Los Angeles, this means that City Council Districts are redrawn to track changes in population. These lines are proposed by the City of Los Angeles Redistricting Commission, which has members appointed by the 15 councilmembers, the City Attorney (1), the City Controller (1), and the Mayor (3).

Lines must be drawn so that each district has close to the same number of people, based on the new Census numbers. Districts are also supposed to keep "communities of interest" intact as much as possible.

As a Neighborhood Council, we have a strong interest in the redistricting process, both relative to the representation of the NC as a whole and for the neighborhoods that our territory encompasses. BABNC has established as Task Force to participate in the redistricting process, for which meetings are posted here and are open to the public.

This year, the Census data are delayed until August, after which districts must be drawn in a very quick process to be able to be presented to City Council and approved in time for the next election. In July and early August, the City Council Redistricting Commission is receiving testimony from residents about their communities of interest.

We encourage all residents to participate in redistricting hearings and to present testimony on the attributes, interests, and shared challenges that define your communities of interest.

The Council District 5 public hearing was held on July 7, 2021.

The Council District 4 public hearing will be held on August 4, 2021.

On July 29, 2021, the BABCNC Board approved a letter (click here to download) to the City Council Redistricting Commission describing our territory as a "Community of Interest."
